A Study on charity

Some of the definitions for charity are “Chistian love” and “love in action”. First of all, in 1 Cor. 13:13, it shows us that charity is important: “And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.” Next, the beginning of the chapter says we are nothing without charity. 1 Corinthians 13:1-3 “Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal. And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing. And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing.” Charity also edifies. 1 Corinthians 8:1 “Now as touching things offered unto idols, we know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge puffeth up, but charity edifieth.” Then 1 Timothy 4:12 “Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.” This verse shows us that we youth shouldn’t let people think that we can’t do anything because we can; we can be an example “…of the believers, in word, in conversation,…” …and in charity! Here’s just a list of other verses with the word charity in them: 1 Timothy 1:5 “Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned:” Colossians 3:12-14 “Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering; Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye. And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness.” and 2 Timothy 2:22 “Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart.” And here is the last and most important one: 1 Cor. 13:8 “Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.” Charity never fails. Other things fail, but charity isn’t on the list of failures!

  1. Amen! And THAT is the point of I Corinthians, chapter 13: the importance of charity (sometimes, preachers try to make this chapter say things that, in my opinion, it was never meant to say).
